My favorite question to ask someone I respect is “What are the life changing books that most influenced you and the way you view the world?” I like to ask this question because I want to better understand how they think, who they were influenced by and it’s a quick question that can provide value to everyone listening. I also love to read and listen to audiobooks.
Lately, I’ve averaged about 1 hour per day listening to audiobooks while simply commuting. If you don’t already listen to audiobooks, it’s something I highly recommend for its educational and calming properties. You can see the books I’ve read so far and what I plan to read here.
When it comes to my favorite books, they are all “quake books”. I first heard the term quake book in an AMA with Ryan Holiday. A quake book is any book that changes the way in which you view life and the world (this can be in any capacity whether it be spiritually, business oriented or simply fun).
I truly believe that the below three books have played a large part in the success that I’ve experienced up to this point and that they will continue to play a large role in how I view the world until I’m well over 100.
Life Changing Books – My Favorites
by Anthony de Mello
Easily my favorite book, Awareness by Anthony de Mello has completely changed the way I view the world. I’ve read it at least 5 times and have bought at least 20 copies for friends / loved ones. Awareness does an amazing job at helping us as humans realize that pain, struggle and anxiety often aren’t real and only exist within our minds. Furthermore, the book is an amazing case study on understanding psychology and how people operate. To me, this quote sums up the book perfectly: “Perfect love casts out fear. Where there is love there are no demands, no expectations, no dependency. I do not demand that you make me happy; my happiness does not lie in you. If you were to leave me, I will not feel sorry for myself; I enjoy your company immensely, but I do not cling.” ― Anthony de Mello, Awareness
By Dan Millman
Similar to Awareness, Way Of The Peaceful Warrior is a book I recommend to everyone. Not only is it an engaging and relatable story but it is the perfect book to read if you find yourself getting stuck in your own head. While Way Of The Peaceful Warrior has a comically similar feel to Karate Kid, it will help you live a calmer, clearer, more focused life.
By Bob Burg
First recommended to me by my favorite boss, this book has helped shape the way I view business and most importantly, customer service. In summary, The Go-Giver teaches that it’s all about them (the customer, friend, loved one) and it’s all on you. While this may have different meanings to different people, it has been a guiding light for me and it’s a lesson I will never forget. So now I have a question for you… What book most influenced you and the way you view the world? Seriously, I would love to hear. And once you’ve read the above books, it would be an honor to discuss and hear your thoughts.
